KG in the making...

How it all started

My interest in renovation and design started when I was just a kid, couldn't be any older than about 6 years old. My mother, who was recently divorced and raising 5 boys, began the transformation of our childhood home into what I call, a Fine Design. I would always watch in amazement at how my mother could manage to remodel a whole home while working 3 jobs and raising us all on her own. Originally, our house was smallest home in the neighborhood with 3 bedrooms, 1.5 baths and an unfinished basement. When she was done with her renovations our home was the largest home in the neighborhood with 5 bedrooms, 2.5 baths, with a finished basement. My mother was a chef by night, she loved to cook and her baking skills made headlines. I watched her build an addition on to the back of the house which would be her chef style kitchen she always wanted. It was a massive addition that expanded the whole length of the home at 60' x 30'. Then I watched as she added another addition to the home which would be her new primary bedroom that was 50' x 45', with a massive primary bathroom. My mom worked very hard, and was a firm believer of living comfortably. In her new primary bathroom she installed a huge jacuzzi tub, it literally could fit her and all 5 of her boys in it. She loved to soak and stretch all the way out and have the water jets to massage and relax her after her long days. Through the years of renovations, I remember playing with my brothers through the wood framing and materials, of what was our home.  It became normal to me to see raw materials, tools and dust on a daily, and it became part of who I am today.

Theres no doubt that I am a mommas boy, and my mother took the role of both mother and father, because after the divorce I rarely got to see or spend any time with my father. So I found myself mimicking her and her hobbies I found to be interesting. Renovation and remodeling was one thing she was great at, but she also had an eye for design. Not having a lot of money growing up, she mastered how to design on a dime. I would wake up on a Sunday morning late and come downstairs and everything would be changed around and different. She'd change around furniture from room to room all the time. The living room would now be the dining room, the family room would be the living room, and it always feel like a new house because of that. So I started doing it, I would wake up extra early on the weekend and get my brothers to help me to move around furniture and it became my thing to do. Eventually she finished the basement like it was a full apartment, with its own living and separate bedroom spaces. She then added another addition to the basement, which ended up being my mothers tool room, which expanded the whole length of the basement. She had everything organized perfectly, and at least 2 of every tool you could possibly think of.

When I got older, I attended a vocational high school where I majored in architectural design, and ended up graduating top of my class with a 4.0 GPA and competed in a state AutoCad competition (technical drafting) where I won 1st place for designing a structure. After graduation, I ventured into landscaping and started a small business designing luxury yard-scapes throughout my city.

The joy in wood working

Wood working sparked in me as child through all of the exposure of remodeling and design from my mother. When I became an adult I found myself wanting to be creative in my own living spaces and incorporating some type of wood in the designs of my home. When I moved to Atlanta and got my first apartment, I came up with a renter friendly way to make my office space incorporate some type of wood accent feature. Everyone loved it, and wanted some type of wood feature wall in their home as a result. The interesting thing about it was, I didn't feel like doing these wood features was work... Rather, it was fun and brought peace to me. Thats when I knew that I was doing exactly what I was suppose to be doing.

I found myself wanting my home to look like no one else's, and the best way I knew how was to create some custom wood pieces to accent my space. Over the last 10 years of living in Atlanta, I've had 6 different places I've moved to before I found my home. Every place was custom, every person that walked in my home all had the same reaction, amazed at how I used wood to create custom livable spaces, and wanting me to come and do theirs next.

To this day, I find my self using wood in mostly all of my designs. Wood is manipulative and transitional, you can form it into many shapes and create so many different types of art and furniture pieces from it, and that's why I love working with woods so much. I title myself a craftsman because I am skilled in my abilities to produce beautiful masterpieces using God's natural element, Wood.

It took me years to form strong trustworthy relationships, that would eventually bond into a strong team and a well oiled machine, but it was worth every moment. Today, I am proud to to have relationships with these brands and we stand strong together making every renovation, a Fine Design.
